Mike proudly served in the United States Army for 26 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Following his military career, he trained to become a certified surgical technician and joined the staff at Teche Regional. Throughout every chapter of his life, Mike found purpose in serving and helping others.
A devoted and loving husband and father, Mike was known for his easy smile, kind eyes, listening ear, and, most of all, his big heart. He was selfless, kind, and generous to a fault—the kind of man who would give someone the shirt off his own back and drop whatever he was doing to help, no matter the time or circumstance. He was a genuine friend, deeply principled and respectful, and someone who naturally earned the respect of those around him. Mike was never afraid to speak his mind, and his strong opinions and stubborn streak were simply part of what made him who he was. With Mike, you always knew where you stood.
Mike had a wonderful sense of humor and could light up a room with his pranks, jokes, and unmistakable smile. A gifted storyteller, he could easily capture an audience and keep them entertained. He loved hunting and fishing, especially when he could share those experiences with his wife or two sons. He took great pleasure in teaching others how to hunt and fish and was an excellent shot. He had a deep love for South Louisiana and its marshes and, of course, never passed up an opportunity to taste-test all kinds of baked goods.
True to his nature, Mike was always looking for ways to help others. He proudly supported and hosted many veteran hunts, giving his time and his heart to causes and people that mattered to him. Service was more than something Mike did—it was simply who he was, and his generosity, humor, friendship, and love for his family will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Those left to cherish Mike’s beautiful memory is his beloved wife of 53 years, Kathy Schexnayder Dykes; his two sons, Scott Dykes (Jo-Anna) and Jason Dykes (Ginger), and his grandson, Sebastian Dykes. He is also survived by his two brothers, James “Jimmy” and Thomas “Tommy” Dykes; his sister, Sandra “Sandy” Roundy; a host of brothers and sisters-law, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jessie James Dykes and his mother, Margaret Carolyn Ayers.
