Ruth H. O'Connell (9/30/1918 – 3/2/2019)
Ruth Helen (and her twin Rose Frances) Palik were born to Arthur and Barbara Palik on September 30, 1918 in Webster Groves, Missouri. While a young girl, Ruth and her family moved to Griswold, Iowa where Ruth's adventures became memories for her to share with her family for the rest of her life.
The family moved to Denver, Colorado when Ruth and Rose were in their teen years. They attended Lake Junior High where Ruth met her future husband, Tim E. O'Connell.
As a young woman in Denver she worked downtown for a milliner shop, then as a saleslady for an eye glasses business and then at Morey Mercantile canning fruit and vegetables.
Ruth and Tim married in 1939. During World War II while Tim served in the US Coast Guard, Ruth worked at the Remington Arms factory at the Denver Federal Center which produced small arms ammunition. Ruth worked in quality control on an assembly line hand inspecting each bullet for flaws. Ruth was diligent at her task but she noticed a co-worker slacking off. She told the woman that she had better step it up because her husband was in the war and the woman was putting lives as risk.
After the war Ruth and Tim moved back to the house they built in Edgewater, Colorado and their two sons Tim and Todd and daughter Lynn were born there. In 1967 Ruth and Tim moved to a new forested mountain home in North Turkey Creek, Colorado. Ruth often said her happiest years were spent here. They had coffee outside on their back deck each morning after spreading birdseed all along the deck railings. Mountain birds of all kinds gathered there for their morning feeding.
Ruth hosted many delicious dinner parties for friends and family there and her grandchildren have fond memories of staying at Grandma's house.
After her husband's death in 1995, Ruth moved to Fowler, Colorado to be with her daughter where she lived many years.
In 2018 Ruth marked her 100th birthday in a four day celebration with many family and friends. Early in 2019 Ruth returned to the Denver area and passed from us on March 2. She will be missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Donald, Rose and John, her husband and her daughter. She is survived by her sister Lorraine, her sons, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
