Born on August 23, 1964, in Muskegon, Michigan, Byron was the beloved son of James Edward Lay and Clementine (Hardy) Lay. He graduated from Muskegon Heights High School and later pursued higher education at Baker College. After his academic accomplishments, Byron proudly served in the United States Army, where he earned an honorable discharge and several certificates of appreciation—milestones he considered among his proudest achievements.
Byron married the love of his life, Romakey Long, and together they built a life filled with unforgettable memories. A devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend, Byron’s life was marked by laughter, love, and a deep commitment to family.
He had a passion for sports and could often be found watching football games with friends or cheering on his children in football, baseball, track, band, and ROTC programs. His infectious humor, storytelling, and ability to light up any room made every family reunion special. Byron was the “life of the party” and he loved dancing anywhere anytime. He loved to Barbeque and his grill was his best friend.
Byron worked in food service and at West Shoreline before retiring. In retirement, he became a trusted advisor to many, always ready with words of wisdom, a listening ear, and a hearty laugh. He took great pride in teaching his children life skills—from cooking a good meal to developing a strong work ethic.
He loved the color combination of black and orange and had a deep appreciation for music. Some of his favorites included the Jackson 5, The Gap Band, R. Kelly, Michael Jackson, and the blues. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, playing dominoes and cards, going to the casino, watching movies, and traveling.
Byron is survived by his devoted wife, Romakey Lay; his children Bryant Lay, Jamall (Christine) Lay, Kaylyn (Joseph) Brown, Jaylyn Lay, and Nakia Lay; grandchildren, Sh’Nya, De'Marius, Ja'Mya, Mia, Lillie, Mi'Lae-a, LaeOntae, Bryant Jr., Bra'Nya, Treivion, Kai'Den, Asaiah, Na'Lani, Tiana, and Genesis; great-grandchildren, JaKari, and Zy'Meir; his brother Kenneth Lay and sister Helen Jean Nettles; as well as, a host of special nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was deeply loved and will be missed beyond words by all who knew him.
