North Muskegon
David "Scotty’" Kennedy, entered into eternal rest on October 4, 2010, at Northcrest Assisted Living Center in North Muskegon, Michigan. He was born May 14, 1919, in Baldwin, Michigan, to David R. Kennedy and Elizabeth (Ure) Kennedy. He grew up in Baldwin, Michigan, and graduated from Baldwin High School. Scotty was of the greatest generation, having served in the U.S. Army in the 103rd Cannon Company, 43rd Infantry Division in WWII from August of 1942 until November of 1945. He was in the reserves for the next four years. He worked as a millwright at Bennett Pumps four years before the war, then afterward until his retirement after 41 years. Scotty’s father bought him a membership in the VFW at the Muskegon Heights post in 1945. He transferred his membership in 1966 to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 446, where he became a life member. He was the building committee chairman for over 30 years and was Post Judge Advocate for 12 years. He attended most all VFW functions at all levels and was the Senior Vice President of the Dad’s chapter. He served the post well and was Honor Guard for over 900 funerals. Scotty loved life and people and had many friends. He enjoyed his work, motorcycles and deer hunting in his younger years and enjoyed camping. He was gifted in helping people when they needed help. But most of all, he loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Avis Burns Kennedy, and second wife of 46 years, Geraldine Block Kennedy. He is survived by his seven children, Sandra Kay Gelegona (and friend Raymond Hausler) of Las Vegas, Nevada; Terry (Carol) Hyde of North Muskegon, Sandra Lee Kennedy (George) Harryman of North Muskegon, Sharron (Lynn) Stel of North Muskegon, Bradley (Deborah) Hyde of North Muskegon, David R. Kennedy of North Muskegon, and James (Natalie) Kennedy of Eaton Rapids, Michigan. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. A debt of gratitude and thanks to the wonderful staff at Northcrest Assisted Living in North Muskegon for their loving care during Scotty’s residence the last two years of his life. Because of his love for the staff and residents, and their love for him, he was named Resident of the Year of 2009. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 7 between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Ever Rest Funeral Home. The service will be at Ever Rest on Friday, October 8, at 11:00 a.m. with his daughter, Rev. Sandi Harryman, officiating. Interment next to his second wife, Gerry will follow at Sunrise Gardens with Military Honors offered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 446, of Muskegon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VFW, Post 446, of Muskegon, and/or to Harbor Hospice.
