Dixie Ann Davis (née Fitzgerald), age 92, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, in Grand Haven, Michigan. She was born on February 1, 1934, daughter of Richard A Fitzgerald and Anna (Kluth) Fitzgerald in Traverse City, Michigan.
As a young teenager, Dixie moved from Traverse City to Muskegon, where she would later meet and marry Richard Davis. Together, they built a beautiful life as devoted parents to their five children. Dixie embraced her role as a stay-at-home wife and mother for several years before joining the family business as the office manager at Davis Roofing. Even after retirement, her work ethic and love for people and children led her to work in the lunchroom at Oakridge Public Schools until the age of 85, where she was referred to as "Granny."
Dixie's life was rich with hobbies and that brought joy to those around her. She loved cats and watching and caring for her birds. She was an exceptional cook who delighted in preparing meals for her family, especially Sunday morning breakfast. Her talent for crocheting was evident in the ilovely afghans and doilies she created, including baby afghans cherished by many. Dixie also enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends and had a fondness for trips to the casino and drives along the shores of Lake Michigan.
An adventurer at heart, Dixie loved traveling across the country with her husband in their RV or on their motorcycle. The family shared countless memories camping at "Gordon's Lake" in Three Rivers, where all the aunts and uncles and cousins shared good food and drinks, stories and laughter.
Dixie was an avid snowmobile racer during the mid-1970s. Fearless and determined, she competed in races across Michigan and proudly claimed numerous victories.
Dixie's legacy is carried on by her surviving family members: her children Dennis (Robin) Davis of Twin Lake; Dorene (Ron) Scanlon of Grand Haven; Dan (Terri) Davis of Fruitport; her sister Janet (Bob) Taylor of Muskegon; daughter-in-law Betty Davis DeHaan; nine grandchildren—Kelly (Dan) Bennett of Muskegon; Todd (Cindy) Davis of Holland; Brent (Amy) Davis of Muskegon; Steven (Jillian) Davis of Massillon, Ohio; Stacey Scanlon (Gregory) Adams of Ada; Erik (Lauren) Scanlon of Traverse City; Dean (Sarah) Davis of Muskegon; Bryan (Elaine) Hanson of Traverse City; Sara (Jesse) Hanson—and 22 great-grandchildren as well as seven great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She is reunited in eternal peace with her parents, husband Richard Davis; son Douglas Davis; daughter Diana Hanson; brothers Jerry and Robert Fitzgerald; and sisters Patsy Enders and Bonnie Douglas.
Dixie's warmth, adventurous spirit, and devotion to her family will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind as they celebrate a life well-lived.
A Celebration of Life Brunch will be held on June 12, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 01:00 PM at Grand Haven Elks, 15 S 3rd St., Grand Haven, MI 49417.
