Don was born in Muskegon, Michigan, to Otto Stapel and Laura (Johnson) Stapel. He grew up in Muskegon and attended Muskegon Public Schools. As he grew older, Don developed a deep love for racing, rodeos, and bull riding — passions that earned him the nickname "Cowboy Don" or "Deputy Don." He was rarely seen without his cowboy hat and was known for his big heart and even bigger personality.
Don especially loved working in security at Winston and Thunderbird Raceway, where he proudly wore his security badge and made countless friends over the years. Halloween was one of his favorite times of year, and he was known for his festive decorations and warm hospitality. Above all, Don loved spending time with his family, his friends, and his loyal dog, Layla.
Don is survived by his dear friend Joyce Hollowell; his best friend Mike Speer; his son Otto (Leann) Stapel; grandchildren Nik (Liz) Stapel, Kacie (Rodger) Scott, and Addisyn Davis; multiple great-grandchildren; his brothers Dale Stapel and Sherwood DeVisser; and many extended family members and close friends who will miss him dearly.
He is reunited in heaven with his parents, Otto Stapel and Laura Johnson; his beloved son Donnie Stapel Jr., and his daughter, Kari Davis
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
