Born on September 20, 1937, in Muskegon, Ernie lived a full and faithful life rooted in family, service, and joy. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Seaman from December 28, 1954, until May 8, 1961. After his military service, he married the love of his life, Janice Ann Shepard, on March 24, 1962—a union that would blossom into a lifetime of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
A devoted member of Fellowship Reformed Church in Muskegon since 1962, Ernie's life radiated unwavering faith and a profound commitment to his community. His years at Dana Corporation in Muskegon were not just about employment but were filled with enduring friendships and a legacy of hard work.
Ernie’s zest for life shone through in every endeavor. With a passion for baking and a love for bowling, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life, often immersing himself in a good Western movie. Countless happy hours were spent camping, fishing, and gathering around bonfires with family and friends, where he crafted cherished memories traveling with his children and grandchildren. A true animal lover, he also nurtured many beloved puppies throughout the years. Ernie’s warmth, humor, and steadfast love will be deeply missed but remain a lasting inspiration. His life is a powerful testament to quiet strength, devotion to family, and the beauty found in simple joys.
Ernest leaves behind his loving wife, Janice Ann Whitlow, children Gregory Robertson, Jill Kennedy (John), Mark Whitlow, Duane Whitlow (Tim Blair), and Jeffrey Whitlow (Mary). His joy extended into the next generations as the cherished grandfather of Brett Allen (Kayla), Genny Kennedy (Heath), Aaron Kennedy (Brandie), and Alisha Kennedy (Nate), and great-grandfather to Trevor, Greyson and Layla, and brothers Donald, David, and Charlie.
Ernest reunites with his parents Nettie Van Nunen and Robert Samuel Whitlow, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Robert, Melburne, Midge, and Lucille (“Pee Wee”).
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Fellowship Reformed Church, located at 4200 Apple Avenue in Muskegon.
