Gilbert graduated from Holton High School in 1979. His passions were found in animals (especially dogs and cats), cars, motorcycles, fishing, and hunting. His love for animals spanned his whole life, beginning with helping to take care of horses at the age of 5. Every animal, rightfully so, trusted Gilbert: cats, dogs, and even raccoons. Gilbert had a knack for motorcycles and cars. He loved to help friends with fixing up their motorcycles and was rebuilding a Corvette as recent as the summer of 2019. He also loved reading and watching television. Some favorite topics included westerns, history, car repair, law, and biographies. In his retired career, when he wasn’t occupied with engines or animals, he was tapping into his love for nature by helping his wife, Angela, with her garden, relaxing on the back patio, and feeding birds.
Gil was a longtime member of West Michigan Wildlife Association, President for 3 years of Muskegon Lawmen Motorcycle Club, and longtime member of FOP Charles D. Hammond Lodge #99.
Gilbert dedicated his life to serving and protecting his community as a Deputy for Muskegon County’s Sherriff’s Department for 22 years—not to forget his excellence as a testifying witness in court—retiring in 2009 due to a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s disease.
He is preceded in passing by his parents, Louis Truman and Mary Lorraine (Hyland) Pearo, grandparents, Gilbert and Moida (Byers) Hyland, biological brother, Louis who passed away from leukemia at the age of 5, adopted brothers, Frank and Issac Pearo, and a cat whom recently crossed the rainbow bridge, Little.
Gil is survived by his wife, Angela Pearo, step children, Chris (Rachel) Davidson of West Chester, Ohio, and Sean Davidson of Redford, Michigan, sister, Sherry Vasciek of Fremont, Michigan, grandchildren, Clint and Lillian Davidson, cousin, Donnie Hyland of Arizona, Angela’s three sisters, Kathy Ortner of Melbourne, Florida, Diana Hayes of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, and Patricia McCrate of Kutztown, Pennsylvania, and of course, his cats, Kiki, Foster (“Peepers”), and Bob.
Gilbert will be laid to rest next to his father and older brother, Louis, in Sunrise Memorial Gardens (2188 Remembrance Dr., Muskegon, MI 49442), of where his grandfather is also interned.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 12, 2020 at 5:30 pm at the Polish Union (1890 Henry St, Muskegon, MI 49441) with Honors by the Fraternal Order of Police. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
