Marion Dale Norton
June 16, 1929 – March 8, 2019
Born June 16, 1929 in Muskegon, MI, to Sullivan and Rose (Doyle) Norton, Marion Dale Norton passed away on March 8, 2019 at the age of 89. Dale trained with the 82nd Airborne and was a decorated Army veteran of the Korean War. After 30 years on the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department, he retired in 1984. He enjoyed retirement – spending time with family, building, fixing things, or helping others. He always whistled while he worked. Dale enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golf, and was an avid Tigers fan. He and Glorian spent 22 fun years wintering in Florida until health issues kept them closer to home. Glorian, his dear wife of 50 years, was his caregiver and best friend. She predeceased him on Sept. 4, 2017. Dale was also predeceased by his brothers, Paul, Harry, Bud, and John, sister, June Courtland, step-children, Darlene Kubicek, Diana Tiggelman, Daniel Aker, and great-granddaughter, Sydney Timmer. Surviving are his children, Sue (Mike) Kotecki, Bruce (Rachel) Norton, Julie (Rob) Lewis, Kelly (Gina) Norton, Dennise Hines (Bruce Yonker), and Susan (David) Hodson, 24 grandchildren, many loved great-grand and great-great grand children, nieces, nephews and friends, including his close friend and nephew, Jeff Phillips. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at American House-Timberbrook in Spring Lake for their loving care during dad’s time with them. A celebration of Dale’s life will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Ever Rest Funeral Home and Chapel in Muskegon. The family will greet visitors one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Michigan Great Lakes Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Stroke Association. Marion Dale Norton

I started playing golf with Dale around 1984. BJ Brondyk, Vern Hosko and myself were a foursome for many years. All three have passed away. We played every week for over 20 years. We had great times together. None of us got upset with a bad shot. We all spent winters in Florida, but Dale and Glorian were 100 miles south of us so we did not see them until spring. So many great memories, but we will all be together some day.

Glad I had the chance to meet you.

In the late 90's I did property checks at Lt. Norton's house while he wintered in Florida. One year he got back a little earlier than expected and I found him home during one of my checks. He invited me in, offered me a cup of coffee and we talked for 30-45 minutes or so. Just small talk about the job, being a snowbird and how retirement was treating him. I should tell you I had never met him before this day. We were strangers. But he treated me like I was a neighbor. He was so congenial and made such an impression on me that I've never forgotten him. I'd see him every now and again over the next few years and he was always especially nice every single time. It was my pleasure to know you sir.
