The Night of the Skunks
Not every memory is a quiet one. Some of them are loud, and chaotic, and absolutely hilarious — and those might be the ones I hold onto the tightest.
One night, Ronnie and I were upstairs when Sue’s voice came floating up from downstairs: “Ronnie! Your dad found a family of skunks underneath the house!” I wasn’t sure at first if she was joking. She had this smile on her face, half laughing, like even she couldn’t quite believe it. But she wasn’t joking. We came downstairs and the entire house smelled like a skunk bomb had gone off — wall to wall, top to bottom.
We went outside to find Big Ron crouched down with a flashlight and a stick, poking around under the foundation like a man on a very important mission. The whole scene was pure chaos. And Sue — she stood there taking it all in, still smiling, still laughing, because that’s what she did. She found the light in things.
To this day, every single time I catch the smell of a skunk, I’m right back there. Standing outside the Hill house. Laughing. Safe. Home. I wouldn’t trade that memory for anything.
What She Left Behind
Sue left behind a husband who adored her, children she was so proud of, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who knew they were loved beyond measure. She left behind a community of people — neighbors, friends, the kids who wandered through her door over the years — all of us carrying a piece of her.
She left behind the smell of her famous grilled cheese. The sound of her singing “Happy Birthday” into a phone. The image of hummingbirds at her window. A house that was always full, always warm, always loud with laughter.
And she left behind the example of how to love people. Not halfway. Not only when it’s convenient. But fully, consistently, with both arms open — whether you were family by blood, or just a kid who needed somewhere to belong.

A Tribute to Susan Marie Hill
October 13, 1954 — January 30, 2026

“Everything will be okay. Sometimes, we just need someone to show us a little love.”

She Was Always There
There are people in this world who love you because they have to. And then there are people who love you simply because that’s who they are. Susan Marie Hill was the second kind — the rarest kind. She didn’t love you because of blood or obligation. She loved you because her heart was built that way. Wide open. Always room for one more.I know this firsthand. My name is Nelson Williams. I grew up as a friend of her son Ron — we met back in elementary school and became inseparable. But Sue didn’t just welcome me as a friend of the family. When things got hard at home during my teenage years, she and Ron opened their door and let me stay. For three months, I had a real home. I had warm meals. I had someone checking on me. And I had Sue.
That’s the kind of woman she was. She didn’t make a fuss about it. She didn’t ask for anything in return. She just made space for you at the table — and meant it.
She Never Forgot Your Birthday
Sue kept a book. An actual, physical book, filled with birthdays and phone numbers. Every single person she cared about was in there. And she didn’t just note the date — she acted on it. Every year, without fail, she would call, and she would sing.
I’ll be honest — there were years when I completely forgot it was even my birthday. I’d be going about my day, and my phone would ring, and it would be Sue, launching right into “Happy Birthday” before I even got a word in. Every time, I was stopped in my tracks. Every time, it hit me: this woman remembered me. She always remembered.In a world that moves fast and forgets faster, Sue slowed down for everyone she loved. That phone call was never just about a birthday. It was her way of saying: you matter. I see you. I haven’t forgotten you.

This is Teddy Cantu - i grew up as a boy in Muskegon right around the corner from where the Hill family lived. I have nothing but good memories of her and she loved my grandparents. 

One day, in the summer time, she came over with bags of groceries and made my grandparents the most amazing taco dinner. It was in the 70's you see and back in those days you had to really scout around for unique ingredients. What most impressed me was she went way out of her way to find special taco cheese with little sprinkles of hot spice in it.

She thought the world of my Stone family.  I loved her for that. I am very sad to hear this news of Sue passing. She is loved by all of us as all of the Hill family.

I have very fond memories of Sue and her beautiful family. I'm so saddened by her passing God now has a beautiful angel,RIP beautiful lady!

I've known Sue (and her family) for all of my 63 yrs.  Although not blood related we grew up together and she was like a sister to me.
(Sue's mom Evelyn was my mom's bff for many yrs). 
 Sue was the kindest, sweetest person I've ever been blessed to know. Many fond memories over the yrs flood my mind with love and laughter.
  There is over 170,000 English words but I cannot express how much Sue will be missed by many.
