Gay was born on Christmas day 1944 in Houston,Texas. Christened Margaret Gay she attended Lamar High School and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1964. She earned her masters from the University of Houston and her PhD. in pharmacology from the University of Texas. In 1979, at a scientific conference in Iowa City she met her future husband, Roger, a surgeon from England who shared the same research interests. They married in 1980 and lived in England for five years, then the USA and finally in the Sultanate of Oman. Gay was a faculty member of the College of Medicine in Sultan Qaboos University. The charm of the country, the warmth of its people, the blend of old and new, the deserts and towering mountains and and extraordinary mix of wildlife kept Gay and her family there for eighteen years.
In 2005 they moved to Canada where Gay began a new career as a personal trainer and instructor with an interest in fitness for seniors. She loved her house in Lantzville and she loved her senior clients, whether rehabilitating a knee or improving their balance or conducting regular classes at Berwick on the Lake. Despite of the gradual weakening of her own muscles from a progressive condition, it was her absolute commitment to physical fitness that kept her strong for so long. One week before her death she was still teaching her loyal class in Berwick; they will miss her cheerful encouragement.
So too will her three children, Laura, in Boston, James, in Philadelphia, his wife Priya, grandchildren Kiran and Arya and Chris in Victoria, her brother Bob Northway and sister in law Donna in Hendersonville, North Carolina, a loving extended family in Ireland, Scotland and England and her many friends all over the world.
Most of all she will be missed by Roger her beloved partner and friend for 43 years. Gay will live on in hundreds of photos and thousands of memories and we treasure every one of them.
