Sorrowfully, we announce the passing of our dear brother, Gene Lyall Craig who, after a devastatingly short scrap with cancer, succumbed far too early, on May 26, 2016 in Nanaimo, surrounded by family.
Gene was born on April 24, 1952 in Ocean Falls BC to Dorothy and Bill Craig (both deceased) and a large extended family of brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, and community.
Gene is lovingly survived by siblings: Patsy, Brian (Mary), Brent (Penny), Kerry (Penny), Lyle, Trellis (Ashley); step siblings Sharon (Burt), John and Wally; wife Patty, step children Danny, Corrina and Rosie (Eric) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Six grandchildren and a great granddaughter brought him immense joy and for whom he carved intricate whimsical figurines.
A workplace accident left Gene with residual pain and an unsteady gait. With his broad brimmed hat and unique walking stick, he clocked miles daily to alleviate pain and remain flexible. The walk would eventually lead him to the Occidental pub where he completed a crossword, quaffed a glass of juice and basked in the connection of friends. A science fiction buff from a young age, Gene recently penned commentaries on Frank Herbert's Dune.
Gene loved working with his hands creating scenes in bottles, carving, and repairing gadgets. He made treasured birthday cards embellished with pictures and passages befitting the recipient. He looked forward to the brothers’ road trips. Gene was an accomplished swimmer.
Thank you Dr. Bland for your warmth and ongoing care of Gene. We are so grateful to the ER staff, 6th floor nursing staff, palliative care nurses and Hospice volunteers. Your gentle care, kindness, and compassion for Gene went beyond all expectation and extended to a family who quickly gathered and were lost.
Gene spoke his own language and walked his own path: "In the while of my wanderings, carry on, make your life long journey, then think of me."
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
We watch him leave our shore and lament as he disappears over the horizon, but out of sight, there are those gathered on a far-off shore shouting: "Here he comes!"
