Glen Neilson was born in Calgary AB in 1941 and passed away in Nanaimo BC on October 30, 2020 after a short battle with cancer. Glen passed away peacefully with his beloved wife Carol at his side.
Glen lived a full 79 years and the resounding phrase family and friends have used since his passing is that there are “no regrets”.
Glen had many stories from his years as a commercial salmon fisherman. After retiring, Glen and Carol enjoyed travelling around the world and wintering in Arizona. They had many wonderful memories over the years, but their fondest memories were of time spent together with their cherished family and friends.
Glen was a jack of all trades and often had many projects on the go. He was very handy and inventive and could fix or create almost anything he set his mind to. Glen was also known for his homemade pies.
Glen was a committed member of Alcoholics Anonymous and was in his 32nd year of sobriety when he passed.
Glen will be remembered by many for his calm and kind personality and for his calculated and methodological way of thinking. Sadly, in his last few years of his life, Glen’s ability to think through and perform the tasks he had done so skillfully in the past, were compromised due to his dementia.
“Gramps”, as he was affectionately known, leaves behind 2 sisters, 3 children, 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many special friends and extended family. He will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege to have met him. Glen will be especially missed by his wife of 43 years and adventure partner for 53 years, Carol Neilson.
In memory of our Gramps, the family asks that you look up his favourite poem DESIDERATA. The themes of love, compassion, human dignity, honesty, humility and a positive attitude are attributes that those who knew Glen would say that he encompassed in his daily life.
Following Glen’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service. Glen will be memorialized in an intimate ceremony with family and close friends.
You were a good man Glen/Gramps. You had a full and rewarding life and will always be remembered with love. Rest in Peace. We will always love you.
