December 20, 1932 – January 2, 2020
Jenny (Jikke) Bergsma passed away surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, January 2, 2020 in Duncan, BC at the age of 87.
Jenny is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, William; son Jim (Leanne) and his children Cathy (Kevin - predeceased), Julie (Travis), Trisha, Danny, Melissa and Matthew (Esthera); son Ron (Barb) and his children Jennifer (Orrie), and Michelle; and daughter Debbie (Kevin). She is also survived by her beloved great-grandchildren Hailey, Emily, Lily, Willow, and Caleb.
Born in Leiden, Netherlands on December 20, 1932 to parents Abram and Hendriena Keyzer, Jenny left school early to help care for her mother and family. In October of 1953, she decided to make the journey from the Netherlands to Canada on her own, in order to become a nanny in Canada. It was on travels to Canada on the ship, Grote Beer, and later the Canadian National Railway, that she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Bergsma, and his family.
On May 6, 1955, Jenny and Bill were married in Ontario and started their family; having three beautiful children, Jim, Ron and Debbie. In 1977, they moved their family to Vancouver Island, settling in Cassidy, and later moved to Nanaimo.
Jenny loved to do craft work. She learned how to knit socks from her grandmother at the young age of five. She knit, crocheted and did all kinds of needlework. Jenny loved clothing and jewelry and would always look her best. Her collection of cats and hand-crafted dolls is extensive and shared with the family. Jenny loved her cats but her greatest love was her family.
Jenny was known as “my sweetheart” by Bill, but others whose lives she touched also called her sweetheart. The love and care she gave to Bill and others was extraordinary. Her strong faith assisted her through her trials of chronic pain and mental struggles. She loved her Lord and was looking forward to being in her heavenly home with a glorified body.
A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00pm on Friday, January 17, 2020 at First Baptist Church, 1650 Waddington Road, Nanaimo, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jenny’s memory can be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind or a charity of your choice.
For great is your love, higher than the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
And let your glory be over all the earth.
Psalm 108 3,4
