John was born in the Village of Berwyn, Alberta on February 17, 1937. John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis; daughter Janice (Terry), grandsons Jordan and Blair; son Graeme, grandsons Devin, Ian and Markus and their mother Karen; sister Anne (Don); and several nieces and nephews.
John grew up in Harrison Hot Springs and graduated from Agassiz High School as class valedictorian in 1955. He attended the University of British Columbia where he graduated with a BA in History followed by a degree in Forestry. John spent his working career as a Registered Professional Forester in communities throughout BC including Terrace, Courtenay, Campbell River, Coquitlam and Nanaimo.
In retirement, John took the opportunity to travel with friends and family to Mexico, Asia and Europe. He had eclectic culinary tastes and enjoyed taking his travel companions to sample the exotic fares in foreign countries. John was a proud member of the Discovery Masonic Lodge #149 and the Gizeh Shriners and took great joy as a member of the Gizeh Morocca Band performing in summer parades on Vancouver Island.
John’s quick smile and gentle humour will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. There is no service by request. If desired, donations can be given in John’s memory to the Gizeh Shriners of British Columbia and Yukon at bcshriners.com/donate-now.
