It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Rick passed away peacefully at home on April 24, 2025, in Ladysmith, British Columbia, at the age of 71, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous five-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Rick was the beloved son of Margaret and John Hodson. He shared the vision and desire for a big family and was a loving husband to Sandy. His legacy will live on through his 5 kids and 11 grandchildren that he cherished deeply: Robin & Michelle (Skylar), Jennifer & Eduardo (Sofia, Michäelle, Eli), Doug & Sheila (Carys, Dylan, Hunter), Brittni & Nolan (Jaxx, Scarlette), Tony & Leora (Peyton, Riley). He is also survived by his siblings, John and Marlene, and was predeceased by his brother, Alan. His passions for fishing and prawning, sports, music, and the outdoors were infectious, and these joys will undoubtedly continue through the generations he leaves behind. Rick was immensely proud of his large and loving family, and he instilled in each of them the true meaning of love and the unbreakable bond of family.
Rick was a hardworking and dedicated owner-operator in the trucking industry, where he often worked alongside his wife, Sandy, in their local business. He also had the opportunity to work on various projects with his sons and, more recently, with his daughters. Beyond his work, Rick embraced life with a passion for hunting, fishing, motorcycles, camping, and mechanics. Many treasured memories were made during countless hunting and fishing trips with his best friends, children, and grandchildren throughout his life. He often fondly recalled his youthful motorcycle adventures to California, reminiscing about the sights he encountered along the way.
Rick was a man of notable achievements and service. He earned his Commercial Pilot's License, achieved a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, and ran a karate school (Dentooteki Karate) in Ladysmith for the community for a number of years. He also dedicated his time volunteering as a Firefighter, as well as a pit crew member for a couple of racing teams demonstrating his commitment and diverse talents.
Those who knew Rick will remember him as an incredible storyteller with a wonderful sense of humour and a genuine care for everyone he met. He had a deep love for animals and cherished his canine companions, especially his last dog, Abby, whose recent passing was a significant loss for him. He also had an appreciation for music, the Eagles, Santana, and Pink Floyd to name a few.
A Celebration of Life to honour Rick will be held on Saturday, May 17th. His only request is that you mention a comment that makes him laugh or someone else laugh.
