on the afternoon of July 3rd, 2020.
He was born in Budapest, Hungary and fled the country with his family in 1956
at the time of the Hungarian Revolution. One of Steve’s memories was flying over
a gray Atlantic in a DC4 to immigrate to Canada with, at the time, his parents,
two brothers and a baby sister.
Steve grew up in Calgary, in a large family of eight children – and that ‘family’ also
extended to numerous close friends in the Hungarian Community. Fondest memories
were of the many birthdays and festive occasions celebrated in the Schneider family,
the family farm near Crossfield, Alberta and trips into the Kootenays when Steve’s
folks operated Blakleys Bungalows, Radium Hot Springs.
A highlight of Steve’s life experiences was his participation in The University of Calgary Travel
Study Tours. A high point in his tour of Peru was visiting Macchu Piccu and climbing
Huayna Picchu, which rises above Macchu Piccu. Steve’s tour of Mexico – in
particular, Mexico City and the Yucatan – was another highlight. During Steve’s
years of participation with the Travel Study Tours, he met many wonderful people
several of whom became long time friends. In 1988 Steve volunteered with The Calgary
Winter Olympics, an opportunity he was proud of!
Steve is lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Donna and sister in law, Lynne. He will be missed by siblings Frank (Jan) and their children Rose (Eric), Robert (Jinah) and Luke; Les (Sharon) and their children Leslie (Melanie) and Tammy (Matt); Beata (John), Joe (Karen) and Eugene. Steve was predeceased by his parents Sarolta and Ferenc, sister Ericka, brother Zoltan and parents in law Glenn & Freddie Russell.
In memory of Steve, donations may be made to Palliative Care, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation.
