Alice was born on December 25, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. An orphan, she was educated at Overbrook School for the Blind on the Main Line. After graduation she took a job, using her excellent typing skills with the Kroger Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. A friend introduced her to John D. (Jack) Ware
and so began a marriage of 57 years.
Alice and Jack volunteered for many years at Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Cincinnati; Jack in the print shop and Alice reading for books on tape. She also loaned her voice to Sweet Adeline singing groups in Cincinnati and later in Naples, Florida.
It was her puckish sense of humor that dubbed Jack’s Cincinnati pet shop “Fur and Feathers” and later, after moving to Naples, she coined his laundry business “Suds and Duds”.
Although blind from birth, Alice and Jack (who was legally blind), were intrepid world travelers. They went on a safari in Kenya, explored the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and traversed the Panama Canal. Hawaii and Alaska were popular destinations.
Jack predeceased her in 2013. She is survived by nieces Caroline Ware Rusten (Jeffrey) and Sara Ware Howsam (Robert), grandnieces Molly Rosen (Peter), Jeannie Rusten-Miao (Dave), Elizabeth Ware Howsam, and Rebecca Johnson Howsam (Michael Bunch), four great grand nieces and one great grand nephew.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice in Alice’s memory.
A private family memorial is planned for a later date.
