“Cleve,” as he was known by friends and family, graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1941 and attended Yale University before entering the military service in April 1942. He was stationed in England during World War II (1943-1944) where he served with distinction as a squadron navigator in the Eighth Air Force until his discharge from the service in 1945. Upon returning home from the war, Cleve was active in the family business, as Executive Vice President of Clark-Cleveland, Inc., Binghamton, NY. He was a director of the Marine Midland Trust Co. of Southern New York, was a member of the Board of Trustees at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, from 1973-1984 and received the Denis B. Kemball Cook Award in 1994 for extraordinary service to the college.
Cleve was also honored with the “Outstanding Young Man of 1955” award in Binghamton, NY, and served his community and region as President of the Susquehanna Valley Children’s Home, Chairman of the American Red Cross of Broome County, NY, and provided volunteer leadership to the United Way of Broome County, Metro Inter-Faith Housing Project, and Good Shepherd-Fairview Home. Upon retiring to Marco Island, FL, Mr. Cleveland served Collier County’s Habitat for Humanity.
A deeply spiritual man, Cleve was ordained as an elder at West Presbyterian Church of Binghamton, where he was treasurer for several years. He was a Deacon and Associate Treasurer of the United Church of Marco Island, and when he moved to Naples, became an active member of Moorings Presbyterian Church.
Cleve was a loving, intelligent, attentive, and sensitive husband to his beloved “Landie,” and to his children and grandchildren he was a source of abundant love, wisdom, and support. He was grateful to become a great grandfather, and delighted in his growing family. For those fortunate to have known him well, Cleve was a thoughtful, reliable friend and colleague who lived his life with kindness and integrity.
