Carol Dalzell, 98, of Naples, passed peacefully at home on Thursday, March 22. She was born on March 14, 1920 in Erie, PA. Following the death of her mother, she went to live with her Aunt Florence Streuber and grew up in New York City. In 1941, she graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, the first member of her family to have spent four years in college. In 1942, she married Clifford Dalzell from Brooklyn, New York. After honeymooning at the Cloister Hotel in Sea Island, Georgia, Clifford enlisted in the United States Army.
Carol’s first daughter Heidi was born just before Cliff’s 14th armored division was sent to join General Patch for the invasion of southern Europe. Later, his unit joined Patton in the march through Germany.
When Cliff returned home, he resigned from the army and joined his family’s tugboat business in New York Harbor. The couple moved to suburban Scarsdale, New York where in 1947 a most momentous event occurred- triplets were born- three girls, Wendy, Devon, and Robin. At this time, multiple births were unheard of. (One in 10,000 births was the frequency estimate.) Carol’s picture made the front page of the New York Daily News under the headline- “Stork over Scarsdale” showing her in the hospital bed surrounded by three tiny indefinable babies.
After Cliff retired from the Dalzell Towing Company, he and Carol wintered in Sea Island, Georgia and enjoyed several world cruises. They joined an international senior golf group which took them to play golf courses, not only in Europe and the British Isles, but also in Lebanon, Israel, Turkey and Egypt- quite an adventure.
After Cliff’s death in 1986, Carol moved to Naples, Florida. Having always lived near water- Lake Erie, the Hudson River, Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, she found an apartment at Tower Pointe, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.
At the age of 84, Carol made her first (and only) hole in one on the 17th hole of the Audubon Country Club in Naples. She also accumulated 2,944 master points at duplicate bridge.
In addition to her four daughters, she leaves four grandchildren- Darrien, Sara, Heather, Casey and two great grandchildren- Emerson and Harper.
There will be no memorial service.
