October 30, 1927 – April 17, 2017
Charlotte Buff Evans passed away peacefully on April 17, 2017, at the age of 89. She is survived by her son, Tom (Wendy) Evans, her daughter, Janice (Guenther) Mittelstaedt, her half brother, Klaus Buff, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 68 years, Howard V. Evans.
Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, Charlotte completed her high school education in Munich during World War II. In 1947, she moved to Wisconsin to marry Howard and begin a new life in the United States. She began taking courses at the University of Wisconsin when Tom and Janice were still young children, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in German literature from The Ohio State University in 1967. She taught at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, for several years, but spent the majority of her fulfilling academic career as a professor of German and, later, department chair at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. She retired along with Howard, a history professor, in 1990.
Charlotte will be long remembered for her upbeat social nature, her deep love of music, her keen intellectual curiosity, and her compassion and generosity.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Arbor Glen and Avow Hospice in Naples, Florida, for their excellent care. A celebration of her life is being planned for Arbor Trace Tower Pointe in Naples, Florida, with a graveside service to be held this summer in Redgranite, Wisconsin.
