Dorothy was born on October 17, 1932, in Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada, to the late Gertrude Harkness Duff and Gordon Alexander Duff, M.D. Dorothy enjoyed reading, games, her children and grandchildren. She was quiet, kind, generous and a wonderful caregiver to both our sister, Jane Anne Adair, and our father, Clark Hazen Adair, M.D.
Friday, September 10, 2021, we three sisters, Janet Adair Pepper, Patricia Adair Mondor and Catherine Adair Cassels, lost our Mother. She would have been 89 years old next month, so we had the pleasure of enjoying her for a long time. She was our most ardent supporter, our connection, the person we all knew we could talk to, trust and listen to whatever we had to share. She was a walking encyclopedia. There was no need for Google when she was around. We never asked her a question she didn’t know the answer to, and was the smartest woman we have ever known.
We grew up, for the most part in Arcadia, Florida, but after our father, Clark Hazen Adair, M.D., died Mother decided she wanted to go home to Amethyst Harbour, on the northern shore of Lake Superior, just east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. After some searching, she called a gentleman who, when she explained what she wanted to do, responded with "Well, I own your camp! Welcome Home!" She rented the camp, and slept in her own bed, for 17 summers which changed all of our lives for the better.
Our grandmother drowned in Lake Superior when Mother was 15 and I don't think Mom really began to heal from that until she returned to Amethyst. Since that first, fateful, summer we have watched her blossom, heal, and soften which was a wonderful site to behold.
She endured many hardships in her lifetime, but had the love of two sisters to whom she remained close, and three daughters, three sons-in laws, two granddaughters, two grandsons, and two great-granddaughters who loved her dearly.
We can't imagine what life is going to be like without you. We will all miss you terribly because you gave us such wonderful lives and experiences.
Survivors include three daughters; Janet Adair (Ginder) Pepper (Larry), Pattie Adair Mondor (Georges), Cathy Adair Cassels (Jimmy); two granddaughters, Adair Ginder Grinsted (Jonny), Allison Anne Ginder, two grandsons; Charlie Mondor, Troy Mondor, two sisters; Margot Duff Thomson and Janet Duff Johnson; two great granddaughters; Adair Ruth (Ruthie) Grinsted and Catherine (Kate) Adair Ginder.
A private family only service will be held at graveside.
