Ed was born in Crestline, Ohio, on December 8th, 1931, to the late Edward McCaffrey Sr. and Ruby (Frank) McCaffrey.
He married Alma Lucile (Heibertshausen) McCaffrey, also from Crestline in 1951 who survives him. The couple recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.
Growing up in the depression era in Crestline, Ohio, as one of four McCaffrey “kids“, Ed found that a good sense of humor, compassion, and empathy would carry the family through even the toughest times. All those values stuck with him and his siblings throughout their lives and were shared with family, friends, and strangers. The world, in a small way, was made better by the positive efforts of Mary, Ed, Raymond, and Pricilla McCaffrey.
After a stint with the U.S. Army, Ed started his career in Crestline working for the Pennsylvania Rail Road as an apprentice and journeyman diesel mechanic at the Crestline Round House. Once the General Motors Plant opened in Mansfield, Ohio in 1959, Ed decided to follow the growth of the auto industry and changed careers working for GM for 27 years prior to his retirement in 1986. After his retirement, Ed and Alma relocated to Naples, Florida, where they were fortunate to spend the last 34 years. Ed continued to keep himself occupied working within the auto industry as a Customer Relations Consultant at DeVoe Cadillac in Naples, FL, during the winter months for another 30 years.
In addition to his wife, Alma Lu, he is survived by his sister Mary (Russell) Badgley of Galion, Ohio, children, Leann (McCaffrey) Blum and son-in-law, John Blum, and son, Steve McCaffrey and partner Tamara Thomas, all residing in Naples, Florida.
Ed also departed this life leaving five grandchildren of whom he was very proud; Max McCaffrey of Raleigh, NC, Leslie Workman, Ashland, OH, Andrea Whitmore-Hempfield of Lexington, Ohio, and Gabrielle and Valerie McCaffrey both in the Austintown area of Ohio. Ed also leaves five great grand-children along with nieces Beth Ann (Craig) Carpenter and Louise (Jim) Petersen.
Along with his parents, Edward was preceded in death by one sister, Pricilla Schwam, and his brother Raymond McCaffrey, nephew Robert Schwam, and nephew Douglas Badgley.
Ed was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Crestline Ohio where he sang in the Church choir, and Faith Lutheran Church in Naples, Florida.
