I’ve known the Whitney’s since about 1958 when they moved next door to my family in Red Hook Estates in Red Hook, NY. She and my mother became fast, best friends as did Greg and I. Throughout the ensuing 60 years we have remained best of friends. I have so many childhood memories that span those early years through high school and then college. One of the many later memories was a life altering moment when she encouraged my wife and I to look at property in Naples in 1987 shortly after they bought their lovely place in old Naples. My wife and I were honeymooning in Bonita on our way to Key Largo when she enthusiastically gushed over the realtor they bought their property through. One thing lead to another and we bought a property in Naples as well. That began our annual treks to Naples from then to this day. We just love it down here and we have Helen to largely thank for that life changing moment. We will miss her.

Whether it was the your house down the path or up in Maine, Mrs. Whitney opened her home in such a generous way. The good times shared by our families built such strong friendships- Greg & Dan, Bill & Ted, Cindy & Becky, our two dads, Calvin & John, and our beloved mothers, Helen & Barbara. I loved when Mrs. Whitney stopped by for a coffee and a chat. She was an excellent cook and often invited us to dinner. I always marveled that she baked her own dessert, too. It was at the Whitney cabin that I got to fly in a sea plane. Mrs. Whitney must have convinced my mom to let me go. Mrs. Whitney was such a big hearted loving woman in my childhood and adolescent memories. Our hearts go out to her wonderful family at this difficult time. You are all in our thoughts.
Much love,

Dear Mr. Whitney, Greg, Bill, Brian and Cindy,

I am so sorry to hear of your wife and Mom’s passing. I have wonderful memories of times spent with Mrs. Whitney and you at your homes in Red Hook and Sebago Lake. She always made me feel like part of your family whenever I visited! Although I didn’t see her often in recent years, I always enjoyed the times I got to visit with her and talk about times in Red Hook and Maine. I’m sure you will miss her very much and I hope that all your family’s memories with her, will help to comfort you now and the days ahead.

My sincere condolences to all of the Whitney and O Donnell families.
