

He graduated from Washington High, Massillon, OH in 1947; received Bachelor of Arts from Mount Union, Alliance, OH in 1951; followed with Master in Business Administration from Kent State University in 1952.
Married Nancy Hess Elder, now deceased along with one Gr. Grandson, Seth Smith, now deceased. He is survived by 4 children: Mary Catherine (James) Adams, Middletown, OH; James M. (Karen) Elder III, Todd, N.C.; Susan M. Milligan, Lake Worth, FL; Todd D. Elder, Columbus, OH; 8 grandchildren: Col. Steve (Valarie) Adams; Christine (Brian) Smith; Chad (Sharon) Adams; Jennifer (Drew) Anderson; Jonathan Adams; Laura Elder; Stefanie Adams; Angela (Russ) Wright. Also twelve great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
He began his business experience at Sears Roebuck as a management trainee. 1957 began in hospital administration serving in various management responsibilities at Middletown Hospital. He retired in 1989 as Executive Vice-President.
He was a member of Ohio Hospital Association serving as State Chairman of the Auxiliary Committee; member of American Hospital Association; member of American College of Hospital Executives and on retirement was made a Life Fellow in The American College of Health Care Executives.
He served on the Cincinnati Council as Chairman and Chairman of the Common Contract Committee. He was a Middletown Lions Club member; past President and board member of Junior Achievement, selected as Boss of the Year by ABWA; was active in the Middletown Symphony; Middletown Red Cross; and Tennis & Sportsman Clubs.
Following retirement he married Jane Hunter Adams Elder, deceased.
He was member and President of Bonita Beach Club, Bonita Beach, FL. Became a member of the First Presbyterian Church, ordained a Ruling Elder, elected as Chairman of the Board of Peace River Presbytery.
A Memorial Service will take place on Monday, March 27th, 2017 at 2PM at First Presbyterian Church (9751 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs, FL 34135).
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, to be used for the Resurrection Garden where he will be interred (First Presbyterian Church – 9751 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs, FL 34135).
