Jeffrey Craig Barnes, 63, passed on peacefully from cancer Sept. 18 at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs. Jeff was born Nov. 20, 1949, in Bagley, IA, and graduated from high school in Perry, IA. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and began working for AT&T, starting as a part-time long-distance operator during college, and ending as a senior account executive for global markets. During the devastating floods of 1993, Jeff was singled out for recognition by both AT&T and his major client, Principal Financial Group, for his outstanding dedication and resourcefulness. In 2000, Jeff retired after 30 years with AT&T, relocating to Bonita Beach while continuing to maintain a farm near Adel, IA. A year later, he became a Realtor with Bluebill Real Estate, earning numerous awards for sales excellence. He was active in the Bonita Springs-Estero Association of Realtors. He is survived by his loving wife of more than 25 years, Virginia; sisters, Janet Lucht of New Port Richey, Claudia Lientz of Rothschild, WI, and Valerie Lipscomb of Bradenton; as well as a large extended family. Preceding him in death were his parents, Rolland and Millie Barnes of Jefferson, IA, and Fort Myers Beach, and his sister, Carol. Visitation will be Monday at noon, followed by services at 2 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home, 525 111th Ave. N., Naples. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Humane Association.

I was so sorry to read about Jeff's passing. He was my realtor for the purchase of a condo in Dec. 2012. Although I had not known him for a long time, he made quite an impression on me. He spoke openly and honestly about his cancer, and I kept him in my prayers. As a realtor, he was the best. My sincere sympathy to his family and friends.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Jeff's passing. My heart goes out to you Virginia & family. I met Jeff at NW Bell in the early 70's and was so taken with his charm and wit. I have so many wonderful memories of Jeff and will treasure them forever.

He was always a gentleman, a pleasure to do business with, a real rose among thorns. While we did not always agree on things, I knew whatever he said could be trusted. May he rest in peace~

Dear Virginia, Janet, Claudia & Valerie,

In the nearly 50 years I knew Jeff, he always projected a warmth, good humor and joyfulness that set him apart from almost everyone that I have ever known. While his passing brings great sadness, the way he lived his life will remain in people's memories and bring a smile to them whenever they think of him....a great legacy for anyone to leave behind. Godspeed, Jeff...

With love & affection,
Mike & Kathy Lientz
