Jessie Naomi Browning

July 27, 1935June 25, 2020

Jessie Naomi Allen Browning (formerly Chesser), having lived her life to the fullest, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, June 25, 2020, after succumbing to congestive heart failure. She was 84 years old.

Jessie was born to Roy and Grace (Kirkland) Allen on July 27, 1935 in Naples, Florida. She was part of a large pioneering family in Southwest Florida and grew up on its sandy shores. Jessie attended Naples High School where she excelled in sports and was named “Best All Around”. She worked many years in the service industry and later in the Collier County Property Appraiser’s office. She single-handedly raised 5 children. After her retirement, Jessie wrote two books; a biography on growing up in small town Naples, and a novel that occurs in part in this town she loved. Jessie was an ardent member of the Naples Church of God for most of her life. In 2014 Jessie found love again and married Amos Browning; she then joined the Chokoloskee Church of God where Amos was a retired pastor. She was active in her community and enjoyed many wonderful, lifelong friendships. She was loved by all who met her.

She is preceded in death by her beloved parents Roy and Grace Allen, her brothers Bill Albritton and LeRoy Allen, and sisters Pearl Haley and Lela (Dick) Armbrust.

She is survived by her husband, Jesse Amos Browning; her children, Lauren (Don) Ball, Kelly Chesser, Karen Scarff, Mary (Mike) Licht, and Donna (Steve) Bare; her stepsons Gene and Rick Browning; her sisters Hazel (Walt) Wistrand and Evelyn Alvey; her grandchildren Ryan (Nicole) Gonzalez, Josh Bare, Grace (Mike) Harper, Jacob (Dana) Chesser, Grant (Sarah) Weaver, Andrea Ball, Hal Licht and Olivia Licht; and her 11 great grandchildren Alyssia, Alexa, Savannah, Ryan, Mila, Emma, Finn, Renee, Cody, Charlotte and Tempie. The matriarch of a large family, Jessie devoted her life to her children and their children.

She was an avid gardener who delighted in her blooming orchids. She was an exceptional southern cook, who could fry chicken and bake a pineapple upside down cake in the same cast iron skillet. She was a Christian, devoted to Christ and his church. She is now rejoicing with the angels.

Visitation for friends and family will be held at Naples Oasis Church on Saturday, July 4, 2020 at 10:00 am. A celebration of her life will immediately follow at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in Naples Memorial Gardens, 525 111th Ave N, Naples, FL 34108.

There are so many beautiful memories of Jessie and Amos. I was blessed to be their pastor over the last year since moving to Chokoloskee, FL. Every time they came to church, Ms Jessie was always dressed so pretty and often times wore beautiful hats or had her hair fixed just right. As she would walk up the sidewalk, I would begin to sing “There she is, Ms. America” and she would smile and laugh. She was quick with her words, and sometimes we would banter back and forth. She would always compliment my preaching, which I always appreciated. Heaven gained an incredible person who had a genuine love for Jesus!
