Julia Evelia Gómez was called home and entered into the arms of the Lord on November 18, 2025 at 3PM. She was surrounded by the love of God and the love of family and friends at home in Naples, Florida. She was 94 years young.
Julia was affectionately known by many names such as Julie, Mom, Mumzies, Sta Mothith, Mommy, Ma, Grandma JuJu, Grandma, Viejita and others. She was born in Havana, Cuba on February, 12, 1931. At about 3 years of age, the family left Cuba and headed to New York City in search of a better life. She grew up in Astoria in the loving home of her parents, Luis and Evelia de la Torre along with 3 brothers and 1 sister (Alberto, Enrique, Carlos and Lydia).
In New York, Julia worked numerous jobs but found adventure in becoming a Stewardess (today known as Flight Attendant) for Pan American Airlines. She and her family were all blessed with a talent for art but her greatest joy was singing. Her beautiful singing voice led her to the set of a New York City television station where she performed a duet with a male singer. Julie’s voice caught the ear of a record producer, but she passed on the opportunity to pursue family life. She married Alvaro Gomez and brought 4 children into the world while helping raise 2 step sons.
In 1974, Julia made the bold move to start a new life with her children in Miami, Florida where she would be near her father and 3 brothers. As a widow, she strived to work a variety of jobs to keep the family afloat. She handled all home matters and had an amazing ability to whip up a delicious meal for a family of 5, sometimes 6 or 7 and have it on the table within 20 minutes. She could make a mean Black Beans & Rice, Pernil (Pork Shoulder) and Yellow Rice & Chicken to name a few. After a few years, a terrific opportunity surfaced to move to Naples on Southwest Florida’s beautiful coast. Julie saw Naples as a better environment for her kids to thrive in. Priority one was for her children to have a better life than she did and her fierce independence and determination was the fuel to see that through. As fate would have it, she landed a really nice job with AAA Auto Club South where she devoted close to 30 years of service. There she would frequently be known as the lady with the most beautiful handwriting, like calligraphy but with a ball-point pen.
Julie had a Catholic upbringing and education, but her deepest spiritual life came into being in the latter years of her life after a shoulder injury. Being homebound at that time led her to watch the Catholic network (EWTN) to pray the Rosary, watch Mass and most of their programming. In the end, she believed that injury brought her closer to Jesus.
With all that she did for her kids during their lives, the greatest gift to them still remains her love and devotion to her faith, to Jesus and His Mother, Mary. That remarkable example will remain in their hearts and memories as they journey on their own faith walks.
Julia is survived by her children, Daniel, Julian, Andrew, Claudia, Roland, Alvaro Jr. and Daughter-in-Laws, Miriam, Adele, Lisa, Paula and her bonus daughter Jeri. In addition, Grandma JuJu loved her grandchildren and their spouses, Ashley, Josh, JT, Sarah, Danielle, Matthew, Andrew, Jennifer and Mackenzy and her great grandkids, Emma & Ellie.
Julia’s children will miss and love her for the rest of their lives and her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Until we meet again Mom, rest peacefully.
