Michael Alan Todd lost his third and final battle with cancer on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, in his own home and surrounded by love. For his family, even having another 76 years with him would not be enough. When your passing brings your landscaper to tears then you know that you have had a life well lived.
Michael was born in Newport News, Virginia, the only son of James Lonnie Todd and Grace Marie (Cathey) Todd. His family eventually moved to North Carolina, and he was attending college when he was drafted by the United States Army to serve in the Vietnam War. Upon returning from the war, he completed a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Michael was a true 49er.
Following college, Michael had multiple jobs that allowed him to travel the country and the world. He ultimately moved from Beech Mountain, North Carolina to Naples, Florida where he lived for more than thirty years with his wife. Michael spent the last couple of working decades at Bonita Springs Utilities, where he met several lifelong and much cherished friends.
This man had so many interests and an absolute passion for learning. Michael loved the mountains, his animals, photography, cars, sports, geography, history, meteorology, and astronomy. One of Michael’s biggest passions was movies of almost every genre. In fact, he had a home movie collection with an indexing system that rivaled Dewey Decimal’s.
Anyone who knew him will remember his unforgettably deep voice and infectious laugh. One of his finest assets was his sharp wit, and sardonic sense of humor. Michael never lost that sense of humor, often making jokes about his own declining health much to his wife’s horror.
Michael was a loving and patient husband to his wife of more than 44 years, and a much-treasured brother-in-law to his wife’s siblings. He was the absolute greatest father to his daughter and stepdaughter that any girl could hope for, and was a truly wonderful grandfather to his many grandchildren. His love, guidance and support for even the biggest dreams will be greatly missed.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, James and Grace. He is survived by his wife Sara Harper Todd, his daughter Harper Todd Segui (Phillip), his stepdaughter Helen Calvin (Wes), and his grandchildren Evelyn Grace Segui, Stahlie Calvin, Darby Calvin, Luke Calvin, Harland Calvin, Olivia Segui, Cameron Segui, and Ward Segui. He is also survived by his furry children, Samantha, Crash, and Luna.
A private viewing was held on May 27, 2021, and Michael’s remains will be cremated and eventually scattered with his wife’s. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA at www.aspca.org or Avow Hospice at avowcares.org.
