On Sunday, July 21, 2024 Olive Winifred (Green) Hoss of Live Oak, Florida passed peacefully with her family at her side. She was born December 3, 1936 in Lahore, Pakistan (formerly, British India) to Charles William Lewis and Alice May (Newnham) Green.
Olive was enrolled in boarding school at the Lawrence School in Sanawar, British India at the age of 4, and spent the next 8 years there, before moving to England in 1947. After returning to England, she completed her secondary education at South Wigston High School. She worked at many places as a young lady and briefly served her country with the British Army. Olive had a zest for adventure and that brought her to a pub in Peterborough, England where she met a dapper Air Force gentleman, George. The two dated and married on April, 27, 1957 in Leicester, England. In 1958 the pair moved to the United States with their daughter. After multiple moves and 10 different states, they finally settled in rural Chandlerville, Illinois.
Over the years, Olive held many interests and hobbies. Everything from raising Chihuahuas, squirrels, and cows, to painting and sketching beautiful art pieces. Her keen eye to detail made for some of the most interesting pictures and scenes. One of her best talents was finding the ever elusive morel mushrooms on the 80 acre farm. She could spot them 100 feet away! After George retired from the FAA, they decided to see more of the country and crisscrossed the US, Canada, and Mexico in their large camper. The desert southwest was a favorite of hers and spent most of the “cold months” there. Eventually, she settled in Florida with George, and had a wonderful back yard to watch all of the birds, squirrels, turtles, and the random bobcat. Olive was an amazing cook and used her skill to bring both English and Indian foods to her children and grandchildren to enjoy. She was always on a quest to make the best pop-overs or curry.
Olive is survived by her daughter, Donna Hoss Green of Live Oak, FL.; two grandchildren; David A. Blessman and husband Neil A. Williams of Naples, FL, and Sarah “Abby” (Blessman) Dyson and husband Justin L. Dyson of Chandlerville, IL; as well as two great grandchildren; Justin L. Dyson, Jr., and Jilian E. Dyson of Chandlerville, IL; as well as many nieces and nephews in the US, Canada, and England.
Preceding Olive in death are her parents, Charles and Alice Green; her husband, George Walter Hoss; and her son Michael Kevin Hoss; and her 6 siblings; Edward, George, Bill, Dorothy, Maureen, and Connie.
Olive will be laid to rest at Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, FL on August 8, 2024 at 12:30pm.
