Robert T. Markes
April 2, 1930 – December 29, 2021
Naples, FL- Robert T. (Bob) Markes, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2021 at his residence, The Gardens at Terracina.
Born on April 2, 1930 in Buffalo, NY to Ted and Sigmonda Mazierski, Bob attended St. John Kanty Elementary School, Buffalo Technical High School, University of Buffalo School of Engineering, and Syracuse University School of Engineering for Postgraduate Studies. Bob met his wife, Dottie, at a big band dance at St. John Kanty. They were wed on April 24, 1954 in Depew, NY. Bob had a 34-year career in management at General Electric’s Aerospace Division in Syracuse NY and Moorestown, NJ.
Upon retirement from GE, Bob and Dottie relocated to Naples, FL. Bob began a new career working at Edison College in Fort Myers tutoring students in Math. He was always active in his local Catholic parishes where he enjoyed teaching CCD to young students, serving as a lector at Mass and attending annual retreats with Dottie. Bob was a Fourth Degree Knight who proudly served in the Color Corps and as a past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus - St. William Council.
Bob’s community service extended to Scouting in Syracuse, NY Hiawatha Council and Camden County, NJ Council for which he was recognized with a Silver Beaver award. He served on the staff for numerous Wood Badge Leadership Training courses as well as the National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, VA.
Some of Bob’s favorite activities included exploring the many hiking trails with his family in Central NY and Southern NJ. He was particularly fond of fly-fishing, cross-country skiing, gardening and photography. Jazz music was his passion and he had a contagious enthusiasm for all things musical – whether it be dancing, singing or playing his piano. Bob was also an avid golfer and artisan woodworker. He loved to create specialty furniture and wood keepsake boxes for Dottie as well as family and friends. Over the years, he wrote short essays and poems about his life and travels. He spent many years documenting cherished moments during his lifetime in scrapbooks to share with friends and family.
Surviving are his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy (nee Zak) of Naples, FL; daughters Susan (Scott) Jensen of Columbus, OH, Elizabeth Markes of Hamden, CT, Catherine (Scot) Stewart of Westford, MA; grandchildren Stephen (Kay) Jensen, Lauren (Daniel) Weaver, and Daniel Stewart; siblings Ted Mazierski of Cheektowaga, NY, Jacky Nawrocki of Charleston, SC; and a number of nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his son Gregory.
The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the devoted, personal and professional care he received from the entire staff of the Gardens, Terracina Grand and Avow Hospice.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 29 at 11 AM in St. William Catholic Church, 601 Seagate Drive with private memorial service for the family with interment following at Naples Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice, or to a scholarship trust for local youth to receive a Catholic education. Contributions by check can be payable to St. William Church; with memo indicating Education Trust – Bob Markes.
