He was born on Chokoloskee lsland and lived in the Everglades City area for most of
his life.
As a young man he was proud to serve in the US Navy on the submarines and
after his service spent 16 years as a police officer in Miami Beach. ln the late
1970's he returned to Everglades City and spent the remainder of his life as an
independent businessman owning and operating both Speedy Johnson's Fun
Cruise and Johnson's Seafood.
He loved to fish and was often seen with family and friends heading out the river
on his boat to catch a load of grouper. As the son of a fisherman and a fishhouse
owner himself, he remained a friend and supporter of the commercial fishermen
all his life.
Speedy was brought up in a time when you said what you meant, you did what
you said and you didn't ask anyone to do something that you wouldn't do
yourself. This is the way he lived his life and we will miss him everyday.
