Winifred Eileen O’Donnell was born on February 28, 1934 in New York City to John E. and Bridget O’Donnell, both of whom were Irish immigrants. She was the youngest of 5 children with her siblings, Mary, Nancy, Kay, and John all predeceasing her. She married George Nussbaum in 1996 and was also predeceased by him.
Known by her Naples friends as Wini, she had several other nicknames used by family and friends – Une, NuNu, Eileen, Daisy – often dependent on when and where you met her.
Wini graduated from St. Barnabas Elementary High School in the Bronx, New York. She spent her career in the secretarial field supporting many executives. Her career spanned several companies in a variety of fields – The Jockey Club, Sullivan & Cromwell, Fasig-Tipton (North America’s oldest Thoroughbred auction company), The Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau, and Reproducta Company (a family-owned religious goods company). She finished her career at J.P. Morgan, retiring when she married George.
She lived most of her life in Elmhurst, New York. Once married, she and George split their time between Elmhurst and Sunapee, New Hampshire, with regular trips to Naples to spend time with her sister, Nancy. After George passed away, she split her time between the three locations and ultimately made Naples her full-time home 5 years ago.
Wini is survived by three nieces and seven nephews, along with their respective families. She also leaves behind her constant companion for the last 9 years – her rescue dog, Gypsy – to whom she was devoted. The family is especially grateful to Avow, Naples who took care of her during her final days.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 2 at 10:00 a.m. at St. William Catholic Church, 601 Seagate Drive, Naples. Interment is scheduled for Friday, September 1 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, New York. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed to Saint Joseph’s Abbey, 167 North Spencer Road, Spencer, MA 01562 (for the attention of Fr. Vincent Rogers, OCSO).
