Albert William Gunther, Jr. passed away on the evening of April 28, 2022 at the age of 73 in his home in New Orleans. Albert, known by all as “Bill”, died peacefully with his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren by his side.
Bill was born on May 31, 1948 in Natchez, Mississippi, to father Albert William Gunther, Sr. (Bert) and mother Norma Brooks Gunther. Bill was a graduate of New Orleans Academy in 1966.
Bill’s first job was with Fred C. Benton as a mechanic. He spent evenings working on cars to support his young family. Bill’s break came when he went to work for Dixie Oil Tools where he learned the ins and outs of the oil and gas industry. Bill’s fascination with hydraulics led him to start his first company Hydradyne Hydraulics in 1970. His knowledge and passion for the industry sparked a nearly 60-year long career in oilfield related businesses. He cherished the lifelong friendships he developed throughout his career.
A long-term resident of New Orleans, Bill loved the city and its culture, food, art, and history. As many know, he was easy to find enjoying a meal at his favorite restaurants. Bill’s passions did not end with Louisiana history; whether it was watching boats pass by or casting fishing lines with his friends and family, Bill loved spending time on the water. Most of all, he was a true lover of nature and animals. Bill especially treasured his many dogs. A man of great wisdom, humor, generosity, intelligence, and romance, Bill inspired everyone who had the pleasure to know him. Most importantly, Bill taught us the value of family and reinforced how we are stronger together than we are apart.
He is survived in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Martha Braswell Gunther; his three children, Gretchen Gunther Linquest (sp. Eric Barr Linquest), Heidi Gunther Morse (sp. Samuel Virden Morse Jr.), and Albert William Gunther III; and his nine grandchildren, Megan Elise Linquest, Lauren Ann Linquest, Samantha Perry Bach, Michael Rene Bach, Jr., Meredith Montgomery Morse, Grayson Ellis Gunther, Martha Brooks Gunther, Albert William Gunther IV, and Michael Hudson Gunther. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Norma, and his grandson Samuel Virden Morse III.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Fred Heebe, Dr. Kyle Happel, and Magdiel Salazar for the care, compassion, and friendship they gave to Bill.
A private family service is scheduled per Bill’s wishes. There will be a celebration of Bill’s life on Friday, May 6, 2022. Those who loved and admired Bill are welcome to attend.
