Armond John Lombas, Jr., a native of New Orleans and a resident of Denham Springs, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the age of 75. Beloved husband for 53 years to Nancy Kelley Lombas. Loving father of Janet Marie Lombas. Son of the late Armond and Lillian Dash Lombas. He is also survived by a brother, Edward Lombas, and beloved brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Armond graduated in 1958 from St. Aloysius High School in New Orleans. He was a sergeant in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War.
After his retirement from a robust career spanning three decades in designing, installing, and servicing commercial kitchen suppression systems and portable fire extinguishers, Lt. Armond Lombas brought his vast experience to the Office of State Fire Marshal where he served for ten years as an investigator in the Licensing and Special Services divisions.
His duties included investigating complaints against contractors within the life safety and property protection industries, where he served to ensure that contractors had the proper equipment and training to install and service these vital systems.
Armond’s knowledge, experience, and tenacity in establishing compliance with applicable laws affecting regulated companies and employees, quickly propelled him to become the agency’s foremost expert involving fire suppression systems. This status led to an increasing demand for consultation and training, where he taught hundreds of people in the proper methods of system inspection, garnering him the respect of fire inspectors and industry representatives across the state.
In recognition of his vast experience, Armond was selected to serve on the prestigious committee for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 96). Armond tirelessly served on this committee for the past several years, sharing his expertise in the formulation of national standards by which all commercial restaurant fire systems must comply.
In addition, his amazing work ethic and his passion for protecting lives from the tragic consequences of fire were constantly displayed throughout his career with the Office of State Fire Marshal, as he assisted in writing the agency’s administrative fire protection rules and volunteering at numerous public fire education events where he spoke to hundreds of children and adults.
