

On February 12, 2025, Audrey Thornton Butler transitioned from her mortal existence to her spiritual realm. Audrey Thornton Butler was born on January 21, 1937, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the daughter of the late Willie Thornton and Mildred Davis Thornton.
She embraced Christianity at a young age and was baptized at Third Missionary Baptist Church, led by the esteemed Rev. Dave A. Dennis. Audrey attended Marie C. Couvant Elementary in New Orleans, graduating from the 8th grade. She then proceeded to Joseph C. Clark High School, where she graduated from the 12th grade. After high school, she enrolled in Business College for a year On March 3, 1960, she left college to work as a clerk at the New Orleans Charity Hospital. As her career progressed, she moved to the surgery floor and later to the Neurosurgery Department. During her time in Neurosurgery, she began creating cards for the prisoners in Angola, Louisiana.
As a member of Third Missionary Baptist Church, Audrey served as the president of the Usher Board #2 for several years. During her tenure, the board embarked on various church visits, where they encountered a 10-year-old boy names Bro. Sammy Blake. Through their efforts, Audrey and the board managed to persuade him to deliver sermons for their Junior Ushers on the fourth Sundays.
Audrey married Harold Butler Sr. and to this union, three children were born.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband; sister, Gloria Thornton; daughter, Gaynell Butler; grandson, George Butler; sister-in-law, Lorraine Thornton; and brothers-in-law, Ulysses Banks and Oliver Douglas.
Audrey leaves behind cherished memories for her daughters, Joy Marie Butler and JoAnn Butler Williams; grandson, Theron Thornton; great-grandson, Theron Cooper; brothers, Willie Thornton, Jr. (Loutisha), James Thornton, Isaac Thornton, Sr., Milton Thornton, Sr., Kenneth Thornton (Jean), Wayne Thornton (Agatha) and Kerry Thornton, Sr. (Antoinette); sisters, Beverly T. Banks and Judy T. Douglas; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday March 1, 2025 at 10:00am at Christian Fellowship Worship Center, 5816 E Judge Perez Dr, Violet, LA. Visitation will begin at 9:00am. Interment at All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery.
