Aurelio Montenegro passed away peacefully on April 20th at the age of 85. Originally from Managua, Nicaragua, he immigrated to New Orleans in 1980. A graduate of the University of Michigan he was an avid Wolverine fan. Aurelio laughed deeply and loved fiercely — especially his four children and seven grandchildren. He was selfless, unconditional, and compassionate. To know him was to love him. Aurelio died as he lived — surrounded by the love of his family for which he fought until his final breath. Aurelio is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Berta Montenegro. His son Aurelio Jose Montenegro (Lisette); daughters Bertha Montenegro, Patricia Montenegro Swonger (Bill), and Alejandra Montenegro Almonte (Jorge); grandchildren Daniel Montenegro, Monica Montenegro, Daniela Delgado, Carina Swonger, Diego Swonger, Javier Almonte, and Lucia Almonte. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial mass on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, 4317 Richland Ave., Metairie, Louisiana at 12:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will follow the mass at All Saints Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Memory of Aurelio (“Papi”) Montenegro to Chateau de Notre Dame Nursing Home, 2832 Burdette Street, New Orleans, LA 70125.
