Barbara Moore Spiers finished her earthly journey on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the age of 77 at her Lakeview home. She was born and raised in New Orleans, along with her sister Lark. Barbara attended school at Redemptorist and graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1956. The following year she married James (Jimmy) C. Spiers and transitioned into her lifelong role as his wife and a mother to their daughter, Brenda. Barbara loved the years she spent volunteering at St. Francis Xavier School as Room Mother and Girl Scout leader of Troop 731. She continued on in Girl Scouting for many years training new leaders, serving as “Cookie Captain” and even traveled to Europe with a group of Girl Scouts. Barbara was a talented painter, crafter and calligrapher. She was a member of the Greater New Orleans Tole and Decorative Painting Society and enjoyed serving as co-chairman of their annual painting retreats at Rosaryville. Barbara adored her three grandchildren, Alec, Denis and Madeline, who affectionately called her “Merm”. She succeeded in loving each one individually and making sure they had a magical childhood.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Brenda Spiers Lafargue (Lance), her grandchildren Alec J. Lafargue, Denis M. Lafargue (Elizabeth), and Madeline A. Lafargue, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis T. and Margaret Fox Moore, her sister Lark Moore McCrossen, and her husband James C. Spiers.
Funeral services will be held at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME on Thursday, April 30, 2015. Friends and family are welcome to attend. Visitation begins at 10am. Services will be held in the chapel at 12 noon.
