

Bartholomew “Bert” John Dawson passed away peacefully in his home on March 11, 2025 at 90 years of age. He was born in New Orleans on June 2, 1934, and graduated class of 1952 from St. Aloysius. Bert proudly served his country in the Louisiana Army National Guard for 42+ years. During this time, he attended The United States Army Aviation School (Officer Rotary Wing and Aviation Course). He was awarded Army Aviation Wings and numerous state and federal decorations, medals, and badges. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer W4. He enjoyed building model airplanes, playing golf, caring for his garden, decorating for holidays, entertaining family and friends, driving to the coast, and taking bus trips across country. Bert was a longtime resident of Slidell, and a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He was one of a kind. Always caring, positive, happy, and was incredibly intelligent and sharp. He lived his life full of grace and goodness until the end.
He is preceded in death by his wife Joyce H. Dawson, whom he married in 1956; his parents, Cornelius J. Dawson, Sr. and Catherine John Dawson; and brothers, Cornelius J. Dawson, Jr. and Ronald H. Dawson.
Bert is survived by his daughter, Toni Ann Dawson Hymel; grandchildren, Scott Michael Hymel (Danielle) and Jennifer Marie Hymel Ledet (Joseph); and his great-grandchildren Cameron, Cullen, Lucas, Wyatt, and Miri, and many nieces and nephews.

The services will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70124. The visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. until the funeral mass at 1:00 p.m. The interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery.
