Bartow “Bart” Bridges Pizzo, beloved wife, mother and grandmother died on August 20, 2026 at 90 years of age. She was born in New Orleans on August 6, 1936. She graduated from Newcomb College where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She worked as a social worker for Catholic Charities before marrying and raising her four children. She was a devout Catholic and 60-year parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church. While she engaged in many volunteer efforts over the years with her church, alma mater, and her children’s schools, what meant more to her than anything else was her volunteer time at Covenant House and particularly the mentorship she provided one former resident for decades.
“I love people” is a phrase she often stated, which spoke to her gift of connection to others – through warmth, love, compassion, and empathy – that was magnetic and drew so many people to her. She was a second mother to many and a friend to all. She epitomized beauty on both the outside and within, yet with an unmatched modesty. She was a nurturer and often stated that her greatest achievement in life was raising her “four amazing children,” who she described as marrying wonderful people and giving her nine beloved grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Peter Joseph Pizzo, Jr., her mother Shirley Devlin Bridges, her father Charles Scott Bridges, and her brother Ambassador Peter Scott Bridges. She is survived by her four adoring children, Ann Clayton Chamberlain (John), Page Castle (Ed) of Kensington, MD, Peter Joseph Pizzo, III (Maria) of Atlanta, GA and Sarah Pizzo Maholchic (Adrian) of Arlington, VA; and her nine grandchildren, Pierson Hughes Castle, Clayton Johnston Castle, William Reilly Castle, Joseph Dickson Bridges Chamberlain, Nicole Ann Pizzo, Peter Joseph Pizzo, IV, Victoria Amelie Pizzo, Andrew Oscar Pizzo, and Margot Carroll Maholchic. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Bridges Wiggenhorn, many nieces and nephews, and her longtime friend Glenna Gillespie Kramer. If so desired, donations can be made to the St. Francis Xavier Food Bank, 444 Metairie Rd, Metairie, LA 70005. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at Lake Lawn Funeral Home 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124 on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 11:00 am. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am until service time. Burial will be private.
