

Dr Carmen Espinoza was born January 24th, 1943, in Ferrenafe, Lambayeque, Peru.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Dr. Luis Rolan Espinoza, her mother Aura Julieta Gonzalez Pasco de Gonzalez, her father Manuel Oswaldo Gonzalez Orbegozo and her sister Julieta M. Cotner.
She is survived by her daughter Dr Gabriela Mabel Espinoza Maclin and son Dr. Luis Manuel Espinoza. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, Luis “Manny” Espinoza Jr, Elyana Martha Espinoza, Melvin Maclin III, Miguel A Maclin and Gabriel D. Espinoza. She is also survived by her dear cousin, Elsa A.Lumenti.
Dr. Carmen Espinoza graduated at the top of her medical school class from National Major University of San Marcos (1963-1969) in Peru. Her training brought her to the United States in 1970 where she began a rigorous yet fulfilling career in Pathology. After internship at Saint Luke's Hospital, Saint Louis, MO, she completed an Anatomical Pathology and Research Fellowship at Barnes Hospital, Washington University in St. Louis. She then completed residency at Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill University and residency in Clinical Pathology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Her fellowship training in Dermatopathology was completed at New York University Medical Center, NY. After holding a faculty position at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, she made her home nestled in the Garden District of New Orleans, Louisiana in 1991. At LSUHSC, she became a Professor of Pathology, holding positions as Chief of Surgical Pathology as well as specializing in Dermatopathology. She retired from LSUHSC in 2011 but remained active on staff for the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Dermatopathology and Surgical Pathology consultant until December 2023.
Dr. Carmen “Mama” Espinoza taught many and remained a constant scholar.
She will be remembered for her unparalleled energy and selflessness in all that she did.
Always a loving presence, she found joy in teaching, gardening, sewing, crocheting, cooking and crafting. Her hands were never still, and we will cherish her genuine way of always inspiring others through her kindness.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 9th, 2025, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in Metairie.
Visitation will be held from 12-2 pm. Mass will follow from 2-3 pm.
