On November 27, 2022, Catherine (“Katie”) Mae Giamalva Cannella passed away in her home. She was 94. Although she had been slowing down in the weeks before her death, she joined her family for a final Thanksgiving three days before she passed. She brought her delicious broccoli casserole, impeccable memory and beautiful smile.
In her twenties, Katie worked as a keypunch operator at American Bank and Commodity Credit in New Orleans. Through her job, Katie met the love of her life, Milton. She talked about Milton even thirty years after his death—she mentioned him on Thanksgiving. She could remember the first time she saw him walking onto the basketball court for a game.
Katie lived a beautiful life. She loved her daughters and grandchildren. She never missed a recital or play, and she was in the crowd for every ball game at Pelican Park. She was always rooting for her grandchildren. She enjoyed rooting for the golfers on TV, too. In her final years, her daughter Sandra always made sure she had food on her table and a ride to any family gathering.
She will be very missed, but she has several loved ones on the other side. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles Giamalva and Conjetta de Corte Giamalva; her sister, Jacqueline Giamalva; and her husband, Milton Anthony Cannella.
She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Cannella and Judy Cannella Schott (Chris); her grandchildren, Samantha Schott Boudreaux (Trent), Mackenzie Schott Cardella (Scott), Trevor Schott, and Tyler Schott (Rachel David); and her great-grandchildren, Cecilia Boudreaux and Philip Cardella.
Services will be held on Monday, December 5, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a Mass to follow at 1:00 p.m.
