Cecile Gaudet Caboche Herfarth, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, mentor, and friend died peacefully following a brief battle with cancer on October 5, 2023, at the age of 93. She was born to Sidney A. Gaudet, Sr. and Cecile Waguespack Gaudet in Vacherie, Louisiana on September 26, 1930.
After graduation from St. James High School, Cecile moved to New Orleans and was soon employed at Blue Cross for 36 years in the accounting department, then as a customer service supervisor. Not ready to retire, she then joined Olsen Securities with her accounting skills until her retirement at age 87. She was predeceased by her first husband, Rouen F. Caboche, Sr., and second husband Richard Herfarth; siblings, Sidney A. Gaudet, Sr., Milton Gaudet, Joyce Gaudet Bucher, Marie Ann Gaudet Wheelahan; and her loving son-in-law, Patrick John Egan. She is survived by her daughter, Cecile Caboche Egan (late Patrick); her son, Rouen Francis Caboche (Janet); and stepchildren, Liesel H. Wabnig (Paul) and Fritz Herfarth (Wanda). She leaves behind two grandchildren, Paul F. Caboche and Dennis Michael Caboche (Kimberly) and four step-grandchildren, Emily Egan Webster, John Merrick Egan (Sara Fay), Sara P. England (Patrick) and Matthew Parrish (Severa). She is also survived by numerous close nieces and nephews. Cecile loved the many years she spent at Blue Cross where she developed lifelong friends and coached the Ladies' softball team. She often said these were some of the best years of her life. She, along with her friends, Eunice, Millie and Anita were fans of horseracing and spent most Saturdays during racing season at "the Track". Cecile had a fondness for grey horses and would proceed to the paddock between races to check out the color of the horse before placing that $2.00 bet! After endless Bloody Marys, the wager got higher, and the horses got slower. She also enjoyed many weekends at her fishing camp in Slidell with her sister, Joyce and brother-in-law Alex, fishing, crabbing, having crayfish boils, playing cards, martinis and singing to the oldies. They each had their stash of pennies for the high stakes card games and enjoyed these times together immensely. Cecile also enjoyed her time with family, especially helping to assist in the preparation gourmet meals with her son-in-law, Patrick on Sunday evenings and watching football. She was an enthusiastic Saints and Tulane fan. Cecile's life was strongly influenced by her Catholic faith and always greeted everyone with a beautiful smile.
After family gatherings, she would always assure her daughter that she made it home “safe and sound”. Now her family knows that she is in Heaven, as safe and sound as she can be.
The family would like to give special thanks to lifelong friend and doctor, W. Brooks Emory, M.D., and to Regina and Jack Capella for opening their homes and hearts to Cecile for all Egan family gatherings.
The family would also like to thank the wonderful, caring staff at The Janice Fidelis House and Hospice Specialists of Louisiana.
A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, with visitation from 9 AM to 11 AM followed by a Mass and inurnment. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Grace Egan Fund for Autoimmune Encephalitis Alliance, https://engage.utsouthwwestern.edu/Egan-donate.
