Only a few days after celebrating his 97th birthday, Charles Newman Kahn, Jr. passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 6th, 2022, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born in Natchez, Mississippi, on February 2, 1925, to Irma Cohn Kahn and Charles Newman Kahn, Sr., he and his family moved back to New Orleans in 1930. He resided in New Orleans most of his life except for his service in the United States Navy during World War II and for 10 years after Katrina when he lived in Kennebunk, Maine. In 2016, he returned to the Crescent City and lived there until his death.
He was a graduate of Alcee Fortier High School and Tulane University (1945) and had a degree in civil engineering. While at Tulane, he was president of the fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau. Completing the V-12 Navy College Training Program during World War II, his service in the Asian/Pacific theater included commanding a Naval patrol craft. Professionally, he worked in the retail business for several years, ultimately using his engineering training in the concrete ready-mix industry working at Concrete Controls, Inc. and Dixie Building Materials. In 1986, he served as president of the American Concrete Institute Louisiana Chapter and was very proud of his credentials as an expert in cement and concrete. His avocation over much of his life was art, focusing primarily in sculpting with plastic.
His many friends, who all knew him as Charlie, were fond of his wonderful sense of humor and his enjoyment of telling a good joke. He was also an avid fan of the Saints and the Tulane Green Wave and dedicated to working the NYTimes Sunday crossword puzzles. He was a member of Temple Sinai.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Janet Kahn Wallfisch, ex-wife, Felicia Schornstein Kahn, second wife, Emily Michael Kahn, and two grandchildren, Saul David Kahn and Seth Joseph Kahn. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Cahn Kahn, and his children, Charles Newman Kahn, III (JoAnn Vickie Willis) of Arlington, Virginia, Elizabeth Kahn (Steve Seebol) and Felicia Jane Kahn (Christopher Payne) of Montgomery, AL, as well as three grandchildren, Aaron Samuel Kahn, Joshua Alexander Kahn, and Zachary Richard Kahn. Additionally, he is survived by nephews, nieces, cousins, and numerous stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great grandchildren.
