

Charles John Mart III, son of the late Charles John Mart, Jr. and the late Lillian Marie Torregrossa Mart, passed away on July 9, 2015 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was born on December 21, 1931 and raised, baptized and confirmed in Mater Dolorosa Parish in the Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans. His siblings were James Bernard Mart, Sr. and the late Lillian Mart Lincoln. At S. J. Peters High School, he played football, basketball and baseball and was a member of the 1948 Louisiana State baseball championship team. While at Loyola College in New Orleans, he also played basketball and baseball and was on their Gulf States college baseball championship team. During the early 1950's, he served for two years in the U.S. Marine Corps. On April 17, 1956, he married Ann Clare Donnelly Mart and for many of their 59 years of marriage they lived in the Lakeview neighborhood of New Orleans. He was the father of Charles John Mart IV, father-in-law of Bonnie Grieshaber Mart. He was known as GrannyPa, grandfather to five children: Steven B. Mart (Miranda Bolin Mart); Laura Mart Cedor (Spencer Cedor); Patrick C. Mart; Brian A. Mart; and Charlotte M. Mart. His love for sports continued throughout his life as he volunteered from the mid 1960's to 1980 to coach football, basketball and baseball for the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD), including coaching state and regional championship teams in the Babe Ruth baseball leagues. He retired from IBM Corporation after 34 years of service. Before and after his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and had served as president of the Audubon Golf Club for several years. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 13, 2015 from 11 am to 1 pm at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70124 followed by the Funeral Mass at 1 pm.
