Charlotte Sutter Hoggatt

Charlotte Sutter Hoggatt, age 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was born in New Orleans on July 21,1939. Charlotte lived her entire life in the area, moving from New Orleans to Metairie after marriage.

She was the daughter of Thomas Meriwether Sutter and Anna Drayton Trucks Sutter. Charlotte attended Louise McGehee School and earned a bachelor's degree from Newcomb College.

Charlotte briefly taught grade school in New Orleans before taking time to raise a family in Metairie, during which she volunteered with The Junior League guiding tours at Gallier House. She followed up with several years volunteering at the Audubon Zoo where she was especially enamored with the orangutans. She loved children and used her teaching skills to excite children about history, animals, and the world around them.

In 1984, she began working with The Historic New Orleans Collection, first at the World’s Fair and then continuing in the Collection’s gift shop on Royal Street. In more recent years she had transitioned to a docent position and shared her love of history with a new generation. She retired from the Collection in 2025. Generations of colleagues and friends will remember Charlotte from her 41 years of service.

She was part of history in September 2001 when her flight home from Italy was diverted on 9/11 to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland. She was there over a week and slept on the floor in the town’s hockey arena. Charlotte was ever grateful to the people of Nova Scotia for their kindness and generosity.

Charlotte is survived by and lovingly remembered by her son, Charles Hoggatt and daughter-in-law Amy; nephews, Robert Symon Jr, Trey Sutter, Jimmy Sutter, Paul Sutter, nieces Jenny Nettles and Beth Richardson; sister-in-law, Becky Sutter; and extended family, Hank Nusloch and Julia Nusloch Joubert.

Charlotte was predeceased by her parents, Thomas M Sutter and Anna Drayton Trucks Sutter; siblings, Langston Symon, Tom Sutter, Jr, and Caroline Nusloch; former husband, Jerry Hoggatt; son, Jerry Hoggatt Jr; and her dear friend Joseph E Gordon.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1545 State Street on Monday, September 14th. The visitation will begin at 9:30am until the service in the Sanctuary at 11:00 am. The interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for consideration of a memorial donation in Charlotte’s name to The Historic New Orleans Collection (520 Royal St, New Orleans).
