Born on July 23, 1942, to the late Charles and Annie Lawler, he was predeceased by his brother George Lawler. He is survived by his love of 62 years, Jeannette Campbell Lawler; their two children, Christopher P. Lawler (Amy) and Kathleen Lawler Morin (Michael); three grandchildren, Christopher Glenn Lawler, Colin Lawler, and Eliza Morin; his brother, James Lawler; and his brother-in-law, Dr. Edward Campbell.
He graduated from Warren Easton High School in 1962. Inspired by his uncle, Parnell Hyland, to pursue the practice of law, he earned his undergraduate degree from Tulane University in 1964, followed by his Juris Doctor from Tulane in 1968. He was an active member of the Moot Court and a proud member of the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society, which recognizes academic achievement and good character.
Chris served his country in the Louisiana National Guard for seven years. During that time, he began his legal career at the firm of Porteous, Toledano and Johnson and soon became a partner. In 1974, he and the late James Donovan, Sr. established the firm of Donovan & Lawler. As a trial attorney, Chris was a force to be reckoned with. Many lawyers recall the first case they had with him as an experience not soon forgotten. His continued successes as a civil defense attorney earned him the nickname “No Liability Lawler.” He practiced law with integrity and the highest ethical standards, treating fellow attorneys with fairness and earning the deep respect of the legal community.
Chris cheered on the Greenies for over 65 years, holding memberships in the Green Wave and Glazer clubs. He was a member of the Louisiana Bar Association, past president of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, and served twice as commander of the New Orleans Power Squadron. Boating was one of his great passions, and he captained his boat “Critical Mass” on many memorable voyages. He was fortunate to travel the world, often accompanied by his dear friends Ellen and Kelly Simon, laughing all the way. He spent his later years cruising with friends and family, content to be out on the ocean where he always found peace.
Through hard work and sacrifice, Chris achieved significant personal and professional success. Yet he always kept life in perspective, placing faith and family above all else. He taught Sunday School at Zion Lutheran Church for 12 consecutive years and was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church for the past 50 years. His strong faith sustained him, allowing him to face his final days with the same courage he showed throughout his life, with his beloved wife always at his side. His ultimate joy and source of pride were his children and three grandchildren, who were always in his thoughts and who will miss him more than words can convey.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place in Metairie Cemetery.
