Clara Jean Pulitzer Berry, age 94, passed away at her home in Greensboro, North Carolina, on September 7, 2025 after a brief illness. Clara was the daughter of the late Jack M. and Lillian Sabludowsky Pulitzer, of New Orleans, LA.
A native New Orleanian, Clara Jean graduated from Isidore Newman School, and attended Louisiana State University and the University of Alabama where she was a member of Sigma Delta Tau sorority. She cherished her family and was very close to her brother, Stanley Pulitzer, of blessed memory. Her cousin, the late Sheila Carmel Bashinski, was like a sister and one of her closest friends;
Clara Jean was part of the large Pulitzer family and loved her cousins like siblings. As the family expanded, her cousins and better halves created the Pulitzer Cousins Club. She was proud to declare herself Corresponding Secretary and kept amusing minutes of their many dinner meetings; the reunions continue to this day.
Clara Jean married the love of her life, Manuel Berry, from Birmingham, Alabama in 1953, and enjoyed 41 wonderful years together until his passing in 1994. They traveled the world together and enjoyed monthly dinners with their close friends, the Kosher Noshers. They raised three children who all adored her. Clara Jean set the bar high as the perfect mother and will be dearly missed. She was an active member of Gates of Prayer Sisterhood and a board member of the Jewish Children's Regional Service. She also volunteered for many years at the NICU of Touro Hospital and the World War II Museum.
Clara Jean had a wonderful sense of humor which she shared with both family and friends. She relished the great food and restaurants of New Orleans, and that was likely what she missed most after moving to Greensboro following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Fortunately, she joined Temple Emanuel in Greensboro, met a new social circle of friends, attended Torah Study on Saturdays and volunteered on Sundays in the temple library.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Joel Berry (Elissa), Susie Golding (Jay), and Patricia Pierce (Tom). She cherished her grandchildren, Jarrett Golding (Sarah), Stephen Golding (Melissa), Kyle Golding (Samantha), Lilly Pierce and Madeline Pierce. She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, George and Beau Golding, Ruby and Nolan Golding, and Elle and Lucy Golding. She is also survived by her dear nephew and niece and their spouses, Dr. Donald Pulitzer (Donna) and Nancy Gold (Dr. Robert).
We would like to extend special thanks to her longtime caregivers Robin Stevens, Ashontee Thompson, Hawa Khelleh, Francess Cooper and Geneva Neal.
Funeral services will be held in the Plotkin Pavilion at Gates of Prayer Cemetery, 1428 Joseph Street in New Orleans on Friday, September 12 at10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Jewish Children's Regional Service, Congregation Gates of Prayer, Temple Emanuel (Greensboro, NC) or a charity of your choice.
