Dominick F. Bonura passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 in his Mid-City home at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Rose Orlando Bonura; and his brother, Anthony Dominick Bonura.
Dominick will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Lynda Ghergich Bonura; his three children, Justin Dominick Bonura, Sr. (Janis Miller Bonura), Jessica Bonura Nail, and Ashlee Bonura Ancalade (Mark Louis); ten grandchildren, Emily Ann Bonura, Gabrielle Jean Nail, Justin Dominick Bonura, Jr., June Marie Nail, Garrett David Bonura, Daniel Joseph Nail, Dominick Louis Ancalade, Nicholas Giovanni Nail, Andre Augustine Ancalade, and Francesca Lynn Ancalade; one brother, Peter Charles Bonura (Angie); sister-in-law, Linda Bonura; four nephews, Brian, Mark, Keith, and Christian Bonura; and one niece, Nicole Bonura Ballas (Jerry). He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews.
Dominick was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather (Papa) who loved spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren. People found his quick wit and good nature most endearing and he always brought a quick smile to those in his company. Strong in his Catholic faith, Dominick served the Knights of Columbus St. Dominic Council #3729 as a member in the Fourth Degree and was most recently a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church where he was active in the Rosary prayer group. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in Administration from Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe. He also earned a second master’s degree in Counseling from Tulane University. Dominick served in both the Orleans and Jefferson Parish School Systems, primarily as a history teacher and school administrator. A calm and patient man, he also taught driver’s education for many years. Dominick would often be stopped in public by former students who couldn’t wait to let him know that he was one of their favorite teachers. He was also an avid gardener who spent most of retired years at Lynda’s side tending to their fruit trees and prolific gardens. Forever a fan of Mardi Gras, his Mid-City home remains a gathering place of friends and family for the Endymion parade, in which he earlier served as a riding lieutenant.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at 1:00PM. A visitation will begin at 11:00AM. The interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
