Don was born April 11, 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama, and in 1957 graduated from Lane Technical High School in Chicago, IL. In 1959, Don joined the United States Air Force and served until Honorably Discharged in 1963. He then attended the University of Southern Mississippi, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in 1965, and earned his Juris Doctorate Degree from Tulane University School of Law in 1971 (still loathes the color green). As an Attorney at Law, Don was a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association and a Notary Public in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Don was a beloved volunteer at East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, Louisiana, assisting in the Pharmacy Department to service inpatient needs. He was also an active member of the Ed Brauner American Legion Post 307 of New Orleans, LA and St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Metairie, LA.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie Campbell Pickney and Buford Joseph Pickney, and his sister, June Pickney Schlanger. He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Carol (nee Cappel), and his three daughters of whom he was overwhelming proud, Robin Pickney, Heather Pickney Conigliaro (Daniel), and Brooke Pickney Woods (Michael). Don was the very best grandfather to Aaron Evans Frick, Taylor Campbell Frick, and Jackson Owen Woods. To say these grandchildren made his heart full is an understatement, having enjoyed spending countless hours playing “Go Fish”, working crossword puzzles, creating projects, catching lizards, and driving carpool. Don was not much of a dancer until a band played The Isley Brothers’ “Shout”.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at 9:00 a.m., immediately followed by an 10:00 a.m. mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home at 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, 70124. Interment to follow at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, Slidell, LA
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Don’s memory to the Ed Brauner American Legion Post 307 or St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.
